The inaugural White Bear Challenge was held in 1996 to honour the White Bear family’s traditional lands, old growth pine forests, and Temagami’s canoeing heritage.

The 2017 White Bear Challenge canoe race requires participants to paddle and portage. The first place finishers will have their names added to the White Bear Challenge trophy paddle. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

Packs, canoes, and safety gear are being supplied for the race by Smoothwater Outfitters. Paddles and PFDs will also be available though it is expected that participants will prefer to use their own.

The registration fee is $50 per 2-person team (in advance) or $60 per 2-person team (on race day). Teams can pre-register for the White Bear Challenge by contacting Smoothwater Outfitters at 705-569-3539. Registration on the day of the race (cash only) will begin at 9 am at the Temagami waterfront. All participants will be required to attend a pre-race orientation and safety meeting.

The race will begin at 10:00 am. Teams will depart the Temagami waterfront en masse and begin a 16 km route, which includes six portages totaling approximately 1.9 kms. The finish line is back at the Temagami waterfront docks.

A map of the race route is available online at www.smoothwater.com  Race monitors will be stationed at key points along the route. The Ontario Provincial Police will be on hand to ensure the safe crossing of Hwy 11 by race participants. Please note: The White Bear Challenge will proceed rain or shine. However, race organizers reserve the right to cancel the event should extreme weather jeopardize the safety of race participants.
